Old Harlow & Newhall PCSO Chrisie Goodman

I hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year. I expect many of you received lots of great presents just a reminder not to leave all the discarded boxes, packaging that your new laptop, satnav, mobile phone, TV etc came in as this is a great advertisement to any prospective burglar.

At the beginning of December I assisted Schools Liaison Police Officer Lisa Shaw and Education Welfare Officers in conducting a truancy sweep in Harlow town centre. Any child that was of school age that was seen either alone or accompanied with parents was stopped and details taken as to why they were not in school. Most of those stopped were off due to sickness or hospital appointments just one pupil was escorted back to school. It is hoped that more of these truancy sweeps will be conducted through out the year.

Saturday 17th December saw me and 3 other PCSO’s assisting traffic police who were escorting several limousines of children from St. Clare Hospice and PAH to Harlow Playhouse for the pantomime.

As usual I will be holding my monthly beat surgery which is always on the 3rd Saturday of the month at the library in the High Street 10:30 - 12:00 please do come in and say hello or just stop and speak to me anytime I’m always happy to help.

Surgery Dates:
Saturday 21st January 10:30-12:00 at Old Harlow Library
Monday 30th January 10:00-12:00 Old Harlow Baptist Hall.

The party’s over and you need to get home. You are likely to be tired and slightly the worse for wear so you need to be careful. Think:

  • Never accept a lift from a minicab touting for trade. They are illegal and can be very dangerous.
  • If necessary walk to the nearest minicab office - keep to well-lit streets and walk against traffic and in sight of other people whenever possible.
  • Always sit in the back of a cab and if you get chatting to the driver do not give away personal details. If you feel uneasy with the driver, ask him to stop at a busy familiar place and get out.
  • If using public transport, have your ticket, pass or change ready in your hand so that your wallet is out of sight.
  • Always wait for the bus or train in a well-lit place near other people if possible and try and arrange for someone to meet you at the bus stop or station.
  • Take note of where the emergency alarms are and try and sit near them.
  • If a bus is empty or it is after dark, stay on the
  • lower deck as near as possible to the driver.
  • On trains avoid empty compartments or compartments that have no access to corridors or other parts of the train. If you feel threatened on any public transport press the alarm and/or make as much noise as possible to attract attention of your fellow passengers or the driver or guard.
  • If possible carry a personal alarm and know how to use it to shock and disorientate an assailant so that you can get away!

Surgery Dates:
Monday 9th January 10am-12noon at Potter Street Community Centre.

Church Langley PCSO Phyllis Chipchase

I have been very busy working alongside Peter Gould from Harlow Council’s Big society team delivering Anti-Social behaviour talks in a number of primary schools. In these sessions we cover subjects including littering, graffitti, drugs/ alcohol and knife crime to name a few. Church Langley Primary school has received this session and Henry Moore will follow in January. The sessions are aimed at year 6 students and are offered to all primary schools. Last year 25 out of 29 schools participated.

I have also been in Harlow College with Peter Gould and PCSO Karen Rogers where we have been delivering “Keeping Safe” presentations to all 1,200 first year students. The content of these presentations include the consequences of binge drinking, drug/alcohol abuse, robbery, the dangers of unlicensed minicabs and knife crime. The feedback from both staff and students has been amazing with many students commenting that the presentations have made them think about their own personal safety.

I also want to thank our local MP Robert Halfon for taking time out of his busy schedule to attend one of our presentations.

The next neighbourhood forum for Church Langley which I will be attending is on January 17th 7:30pm at Church Langley Primary school if you have any issues you would like to raise please pop along or email me.

Lastly, I wish you all a very Happy New Year!

Surgery Dates:
Thursday January 12th 10-11:30am at Church Langley Community Centre
Sunday January 20th 11-2pm at Tesco.
